Summary: How Flow Builder and Flow Builder Plus load FI and MM documents into FQM_FLOW, and why a posted document never appears.

**Flow Builder is the program that turns accounting documents into cash flows in One Exposure.** Cash Flow Analyzer and the liquidity forecast do not read BKPF and BSEG. They read `FQM_FLOW`. If Flow Builder did not build a flow, the document is invisible to cash management no matter how correctly it was posted in FI.

This page is the missing middle of the [S/4HANA cash forecasting](https://gravam.com/blog/sap-s4hana-cash-forecasting) guide and the [One Exposure](https://gravam.com/blog/one-exposure-from-operations-fqm-flow) note. Those pages assume the flows exist. This one is what you run when they do not.

## Two programs, one table

SAP's own Cash Flow Analyzer note splits the load:

- **FI and MM** go through Flow Builder. Until S4CORE 105 that is `FCLM_FLOW_BUILDER`. From S4CORE 106 it is `FCLM_FLOW_BUILDER_2`, Flow Builder Plus.
- **TRM, CML, SD and payment requests** go through `FQM_INITIALIZE`, not through Flow Builder.

You do not have to run either by hand every morning if the automatic update is actually switched on. When a user says "I posted it and Cash Flow Analyzer is empty", the first question is which of those two paths the document belongs to. A treasury deal that never appears is an `FQM_INITIALIZE` problem. A vendor invoice that never appears is a Flow Builder problem. Mixing the two wastes a day.

From S/4HANA 2021, SAP's central KBA for Flow Builder Plus says to switch. It also says Flow Builder 1.0 is deprecated from S4CORE 107 SP00. If a system is still scheduled on the old program after that release, treat the schedule as debt, not as a preference.

## What has to be true before a line becomes a flow

SAP's community write-up of the failures is more useful than the program documentation, because the program exits cleanly when it skips a line. The checks that actually stop a flow:

1. **Flow type on the line.** `BSEG-FQFTYPE` has to be filled, and only some ranges are built into One Exposure. The ranges SAP names are 90* actual, 80* bank clearing, 70* payment-request clearing, 60* customer/vendor and 50* others. A line with no flow type, or a type outside those ranges, is ignored. `FQM_UPDATE_FLOW_TYPE` refreshes missing types. If the catalog itself is empty, `FQM_INIT_FLOW_CAT_KF` loads it into `VFCLMFLOWLVL`.
2. **The line is still open, unless it is an actual.** A cleared item (`BSEG-AUGBL` filled) is not built, except flow type 90*. A zero amount in document or local currency is not built either. There is nothing to represent.
3. **No later IBU flow for the same account.** If `FQM_FLOW` already holds an IBU flow (`TRANSACTION_OWNER` = `IBU`) whose transaction date is later than the document, earlier documents are skipped. This is the one that looks like a program bug and is a date comparison.
4. **The One Exposure start date.** In S/4HANA 2023 there is a start date under Cash Management → Data Setup. Actual flows before that date are not built. People set it during a migration and then forget it.
5. **Liquidity analysis scope.** Liquidity analysis (`FQM_FLOW-OWNER` = `GCC`) needs full scope and the business function `FIN_FSCM_CLM`. Cash position (`OWNER` = `POS`) is available on basic scope. Asking the analyzer for liquidity analysis on a basic-scope system returns an empty grid that is working as designed.
6. **The automatic job.** KBA 3444282 is the case where a manual run of `FCLM_FLOW_BUILDER_2` fills `FQM_FLOW` and the automatic update does not. For cash position, the workflow event linkage has to be active. A green manual run plus an empty intraday position means the linkage, not the document.

Cash Flow Analyzer then reads what was built. Value date in the app is `FQM_FLOW-TRANSACTION_DATE`. Posting date is `FQM_FLOW-POSTING_DATE`. Display currency is converted with the exchange-rate type you pass in, at today's rate, not at the document's rate. A "wrong" display amount is often that conversion, not a missing flow.

## What I would check, in order

When a document is missing, stop after the first failure. The order is the order SAP's own troubleshooting walks:

- Flow type on the BSEG line, then the catalog.
- Cleared flag and amount.
- A later IBU flow on the same account.
- The One Exposure start date.
- Scope: cash position or liquidity analysis, and whether the business function matches.
- Only then the job: manual run works, automatic run does not.

`FCLM_FB2_UTIL` is the utility SAP points at for lines Flow Builder Plus built incorrectly or not at all. Use it before rewriting a loading program.

## What I left out, on purpose

- **The full decision tree inside KBA 3595016.** It is the troubleshooting guide SAP's Cash Flow Analyzer post points at. I have not read that KBA in full; the checks above are the ones stated in the public posts and KBA symptom texts.
- **Chain-tracing rules for every source application.** FI is documented. TRM and SD are a different loader. I am not going to pretend one rule covers both.
- **Aggregation.** After `FQM_AGGREGATE_FLOWS`, a later build can legitimately create nothing new, because the granular actuals are already rolled up. That deserves its own note the day someone hits it; it is not the first thing to suspect.

The forecast is only as good as `FQM_FLOW`. Flow Builder is how FI and MM get there. If it is not running, or it is running and skipping the lines, no layout in Cash Flow Analyzer will invent them.

## Questions this article answers

**Q: What is SAP Flow Builder?**

Flow Builder is the S/4HANA Cash Management program that turns FI and MM documents into cash flows in the One Exposure table FQM_FLOW. Through S4CORE 105 the program is FCLM_FLOW_BUILDER. From S4CORE 106 (S/4HANA 2021) the program is Flow Builder Plus, FCLM_FLOW_BUILDER_2. TRM, CML, SD and payment requests are loaded by FQM_INITIALIZE, not by Flow Builder.

**Q: Why is a posted document missing from FQM_FLOW?**

The usual reasons are a missing or out-of-range flow type on the BSEG line (BSEG-FQFTYPE), a cleared item that is not flow type 90*, a zero amount, an existing IBU flow that is later than the document, a One Exposure start date after the posting, or — for cash position — a workflow linkage that is not active so the automatic update never runs. Running FCLM_FLOW_BUILDER_2 by hand and seeing the flow appear is the sign that the document qualifies and the automatic job does not.

**Q: What is the difference between Flow Builder and Flow Builder Plus?**

Flow Builder Plus (FCLM_FLOW_BUILDER_2) is the version SAP recommends from S/4HANA 2021, S4CORE 106. SAP's central KBA for that release says Flow Builder 1.0 is deprecated from S4CORE 107 SP00. The job of both is the same: build FI and MM cash flows into FQM_FLOW.
